The Senate

The Senate has 100 seats, two per state.  In November of every even-numbered year, approximately one-third of the seats are up for election.  These numbers may vary slightly from year to year due to special elections required by in-term vacancies.

Senators may serve any number of terms.

Total Cost (Net Operating Expenses) of Senate elections in 2007-08:

 $383,909,711.23

This figure represents 34 races, including 5 Open Seats.

The average cost of a single race was $11,291,462.10
The average cost of a race for an Open Seat was $12,168,441.85
