Remainders November 1 - December 30, 2006 |

In 1985 I began my work with wood. I instinctively kept all the remnants that were by-products of my creations. It seemed to me irreverent to burn, or throw out these scraps and I sensed that I would eventually use them. In between building large, long term projects, I often turned to my sorted-by-size collection and fashioned new, smaller sculptures. When I moved to Flagstaff, the boxed remnants came with me. Two years ago I started some new
experiments with the smallest of my scrap collection. When invited to put together
this exhibit, it seemed natural that the entire ensemble should emerge from these Remainders. My obsession to save left over
bits and pieces of wood comes, I think, from my fascination with the material and a sense
it should be honored. Wood is an endangered resource - perhaps not everyone
agrees with this - but I believe it is so nevertheless. Since I use this material
for my own, personal exploration, the least I can do is not discard it casually. Lynne
