The Greenness of Sea brings
together a body of work created from my 2004 Artist-in-Residence post at An Tobar Art
Centre, Isle of Mull, Scotland, working on a project called the Wee Islands.
Mull is situated on the edge of the
Atlantic on the west coast of Scotland, and is part of the Inner Hebrides. The purpose of the project was to allow an
opportunity for islanders and visitors to engage with a practicing artist.
During a period of three weeks I made
boat trips to several of the islands that are situated around Mull Iona, Staffa,
Lunga, The Treshnish Isles, Ulva, Calve, Isle of Women, Inch Kenneth, and Erraid. Working directly in the landscape on a daily basis,
I made numerous drawings and paintings of the plant and animal life, the changing rhythms
of the sea, and the elemental phenomenon of natures architecture as experienced on
Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. In so doing, I
too became part of this landscape. My sketches
became a visual record of that time and the inspiration for the work now on exhibition,
created back in my Glasgow studio over a three-month period.
The title of this exhibition is inspired
by the Gaelic naming of places, which describes a place by its essential nature and
history. Going beyond a picturesque
interpretation of place, I was left with the lingering sensations of colour, movement, and
form characterized by the all-pervading presence of the Atlantic and her neighbouring
seas. Set against this epic backdrop are the
people who have settled here and taken on the might of the sea and the rigours of island
life. Together they characterize the
multi-layered beauty of this place which, though often defined by its physical and
elemental nature, remains mysterious.
The paintings describe my experience of
the landscape distilled through working from memory only essential elements remain
and an inner landscape is also evoked. I have
titled each work according to an actual place and numbered them as dark and
light landscapes 1-10. In so doing
I wish to convey this idea of an inner landscape existing within nature.
